6p Reception, 6:30p Lecture

Kathryn Ewing, PhD, director of the Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) Programme in South Africa, will deliver a public lecture to kick off the annual Informal Cities Workshop. The title of her lecture is Co-Designing the Public Realm in the Contested Territory of Informality: VPUU, Cape Town, and the Western Cape, South Africa.

South African cities, particularly Cape Town, experience rapid urban growth. The result is often one of insecure living conditions in low income "townships" in urban South Africa coupled with a high crime rate. Less attention is given to the space in-between buildings or the public space, ensuing "leftover" dangerous urban spaces. Furthermore, the expanding informal communities continue to remain under-invested and without substantial community amenities, social services, resources, and infrastructure. To address these needs the VPUU Programme created an internationally recognized, comprehensive area-based community development approach that aims through the design of public space to develop safe and integrated sustainable communities, citizenship, and pride as well as improve the daily quality of life for residents.
